Goo Hara

Goo Hara (구하라) was a vocalist and visual of KARA who joined the group in March 2008, becoming one of K-pop's most iconic faces of the 2010s. Born January 13, 1991 in Gwangju, South Korea, she was central to KARA's Japan breakthrough and helped the group make history as one of the first K-pop acts to sell out Tokyo Dome in 2013. She passed away on November 24, 2019. Her legacy within KARA is preserved through archived performances and the 2024 digital single Hello, which incorporated her original vocals. Beyond KARA, Hara launched a solo career in July 2015 with her debut EP Alohara (Can You Feel It?), which charted at number four in South Korea. After KARA disbanded in 2016, she continued recording and performing independently under KeyEast and later Production Ogi in Japan. Her final release was the maxi single Midnight Queen, issued in September 2019 just weeks before she passed away. She also built a television presence through roles in City Hunter (2011) and variety work on KBS's Invincible Youth. Hara's death prompted significant legal reform in South Korea. The Goo Hara Act, passed in 2021, prevents estranged parents from inheriting the estate of a deceased adult child -- a direct response to her biological mother's attempt to claim half of Hara's assets despite having abandoned the family decades earlier. She remains a deeply respected figure in K-pop history.
