Jongseob's pre-debut career was already remarkable. From December 2016 to April 2017, he competed on the SBS audition show K-Pop Star 6 and won as part of the duo Boyfriend, alongside Park Hyun-jin. The win earned the duo a trainee contract with YG Entertainment. In 2018, he entered YG Treasure Box, a survival competition for the label's next boy group.
