Um Tae Goo

Um Tae Goo (엄태구) is one of Korean cinema and television's most compelling character actors, the kind of performer who makes you forget you're watching a performance. Born November 9, 1983 in Seoul, he studied at Konkuk University's Film Department and spent years building a reputation in supporting roles before breaking out as a lead. His work in Night in Paradise (2020) established him internationally, a brutal, poetic crime film directed by Park Hoon-jung where Um matched intensity with restraint in a way that drew critical comparisons to the best of Korean cinema's noir tradition. That performance followed acclaimed turns in The Age of Shadows (2016) and Coin Locker Girl (2015), both prestige productions that put him in rooms with Korea's finest directors. On television, Um proved equally versatile. The romantic comedy My Sweet Mobster (2024) on ENA showed a surprising warmth and comedic timing that won him a new generation of fans, while the supernatural thriller Light Shop (2024) confirmed that no genre is out of his range. He joined TEAMHOPE in 2024 alongside label mates Lee Ha-nui and Byun Yo-han. In 2026, Um steps into Born Guilty, the Disney+ crime noir starring Park Seo Joon, playing Saengdak, a North Gang member who bets his life on a dangerous gamble.
