Youngjae (최영재, Choi Young-jae; born September 17, 1996, Jeonju, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea) occupies a specific and not easily replicated position in K-pop: a main vocalist whose ceiling is high enough that even casual observers notice it. From his debut with GOT7 in January 2014, his raw, gospel-tinged delivery set him apart from the more polished production that dominated the mid-2010s idol landscape. Where many vocalists in the genre refined away edges in service of a smoother commercial sound, Youngjae kept his — and that decision paid off over time in critical reputation and audience loyalty.
