March 29, 2026
Korean actor Lee Sang Bo (이상보) was found dead on March 27, 2026 at his home in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province. He was 44 years old. His agency, Korea Management Group (KMG), confirmed the passing that same day, releasing a statement that read: "We regret to inform you of the passing of our actor Lee Sang Bo. At the request of his family, we are unable to disclose the cause of death. To protect the family's privacy, we respectfully decline interviews and visits and ask for your cooperation." According to Pyeongtaek Police Station, a family member discovered him unresponsive around 12:40 PM KST and contacted authorities. Police said no criminal suspicion has been found, and an investigation into the exact cause is ongoing. His funeral was held on March 29 at Pyeongtaek Central Funeral Home.
Twenty Years on Screen
Lee debuted in 2006 in the KBS 2TV drama Invisible Man Choi Jang Soo, entering an industry he would give the next two decades to. Over the years, he built a steady television presence across multiple KBS daily dramas, including Daughters-in-Law and Cruel Love. He crossed into film too, with credits on Secretly, Greatly (2013) and Mephisto. The daily drama format gave Lee a particular kind of training that few international audiences fully appreciate: productions running five days a week over 100 or more episodes require actors capable of delivering sustained, emotionally consistent performances under relentless production schedules. Lee worked within that system consistently for nearly two decades, building a track record as a dependable supporting and eventually leading presence in KBS2 programming. That grinding, long-form career discipline would become both his foundation and his safety net when everything nearly fell apart in 2022.
His biggest break came in 2021 with Miss Monte-Cristo (미스 몬테크리스토), a KBS2 daily drama that aired from February through July. A modern revenge story loosely adapted from Alexandre Dumas' novel, the series confirmed Lee as a lead-capable talent in the daytime drama space, becoming one of the top-rated dramas in its KBS2 timeslot that year and running across 125 episodes. Then in 2023, when the originally cast lead of The Elegant Empire (우아한 제국) stepped down for personal reasons, Lee stepped in. The KBS2 series ran from August 2023 through January 2024, and according to the 2023 KBS Drama Awards broadcast in December, Lee took home Best Actor in a Daily Drama for his work on the show. A remarkable turn for an actor whose career had nearly been derailed the year before.
The Drug Case That Almost Ended Everything
In September 2022, Lee Sang Bo found himself at the center of a media storm when allegations of drug use first surfaced. According to police reports from that period, an initial home drug test returned a preliminary positive result for morphine. The story spread rapidly, threatening to end a career Lee had built over 16 years. But Lee contested the allegations directly. He publicly explained that he had been taking prescribed antidepressants and tranquilizers to cope with a serious personal loss. He submitted to hospital testing, which came back negative. After a full police investigation, Pyeongtaek Police Station cleared him of all suspicion and decided not to refer the case for prosecution, according to reports confirmed by Korean media at the time. The false accusations nonetheless cast a long shadow over his public image and cost him significant professional opportunities through 2022 and into early 2023.
The Comeback They Won't See
The 2023 KBS Drama Awards win sent a clear signal across the industry: Lee Sang Bo was back. In 2025, he signed an exclusive contract with Korea Management Group, the clearest possible statement of intent. The agency represents a roster of established Korean actors, and the deal was positioned to move Lee into higher-profile primetime projects for 2026 and beyond. Daily drama veterans who successfully cross into primetime represent one of Korean TV's most valued casting assets, combining the stamina of long-form production with proven audience appeal. As reported by Maeil Business Newspaper at the time of his death, that fresh agency deal made the news of his passing all the more shocking to those who had tracked his arc from accusation to acquittal to award win to new contract. Fans who had stayed through the rough years were already anticipating whatever came next. It never came.
A Community in Mourning
Following the news, fans searched for Lee Sang Bo's social media accounts to leave tributes, only to find them wiped clean. His Instagram, where he had maintained a modest following of 156 with 31 posts, was left reading "No posts" with no profile image and no trace of the messages he had used to communicate with fans. Korean entertainment outlets, including Maeil Business Newspaper, noted the social media erasure as an additional layer of loss for a community already stunned. Industry figures who had worked alongside him on KBS2 productions posted condolences, remembering him as diligent and warm throughout demanding production schedules. Tributes poured in from industry peers and fans across Asia, with many pointing to the 2023 KBS Awards night as the moment they fully understood what Lee Sang Bo was capable of. He was 44.
