9m88, born Joanne Tang Yu-chi on November 20, 1990, in Taipei, Taiwan, is a singer, songwriter, and actress whose jazz-inflected R&B has carved a singular space in Taiwanese contemporary music. After studying fashion design at Shih Chien University, she pursued a jazz voice degree at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York, developing the cosmopolitan sensibility that defines her sound across jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and pop.
Her 2019 debut album "Beyond Mediocrity" established the aesthetic: vivid retro visuals, bittersweet personal lyrics, and musicianship that draws as readily from classic soul as from Japanese city pop. Her cover of Mariya Takeuchi's "Plastic Love" introduced her to international audiences and became a touchstone for the global city pop revival. In 2021, she performed with the Cloud Gate Dance Theater, Taiwan's internationally renowned modern dance company, and contributed a track to "T-POP: No Fear In Love," a compilation celebrating the one-year anniversary of Taiwan's legalization of same-sex marriage.
In 2024, she released the single "Tales of Taipei" and "Kitchen" as a featured artist with Japanese band Penthouse. She followed with "A Foggy Tale" and a role in the 2025 film "Girl." Her label, Jazz Baby Ltd., positions her outside conventional pop infrastructure -- a deliberate choice that has allowed her singular identity to develop without compromise. She won the 2018 ELLE Taiwan Style Awards for Most Stylish Future Star, and her Instagram following reflects an international fanbase drawn to her rare combination of musical depth and visual distinctiveness.
