Im Joo Hwan

Im Joo Hwan (임주환) built one of Korean television's quieter careers across two decades of steady, varied work. Born May 18, 1982, in Seoul, he graduated from Daejin University with a degree in theatre and film before making his professional debut in the 2004 SBS drama Magic. His first leading role came with the MBC historical-romance hybrid Tamra, the Island (2009), a period-set story filmed in Jeju that earned cult status despite low ratings and secured him New Actor of the Year at the 2009 Korean Culture and Entertainment Awards. The breakout cemented his fanbase in Japan and set the tone for a career defined by selective, character-first choices rather than commercial chasing. Over the next decade, he headlined more than 40 projects across television, film, and stage. Key credits include Ugly Alert (KBS2, 2013), Uncontrollably Fond (KBS2, 2016) opposite Kim Woo Bin, The Bride of Habaek (tvN, 2017), and Different Dreams (MBC, 2019). He also maintained a parallel stage career, appearing in productions including A Streetcar Named Desire and The Pride. In 2024, his friendship with actors Cha Tae Hyun and Jo In Sung brought him to a wider audience when he appeared on tvN variety show Unexpected Business. In April 2025, he signed with Base Camp Company, the management agency the pair co-founded. That same year, he appeared internationally in Gangs of London Season 3 as Philip, a documentary photographer embedded with a Busan-origin gang operating in London. In February 2026, reports emerged that he had quietly worked shifts at a Coupang logistics center in Incheon during his hiatus. His agency confirmed the news the same day.
