Kim Jong-wan
Kim Jong-wan (김종완) is one of the defining voices in modern Korean rock: vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and the emotional core of NELL. Born in Seoul in 1980, he helped form the band in 1999 before its 2001 debut, then carried that project from the indie-club circuit into the mainstream without sanding off the mood, tension, or melancholy that made NELL matter in the first place.
His catalog explains the reputation. NELL's run through the 2000s and 2010s turned Kim into a rare Korean rock writer whose lyrics and arrangements crossed cleanly into the idol and mainstream-pop world. After the band's years under Woollim Entertainment, he moved into the self-run Space Bohemian era, keeping NELL independent while maintaining the same cinematic songwriting identity that made records like Slip Away and Newton's Apple stick.
Kim's relevance also sits in his collaboration lane. G-Dragon brought him onto Today in 2012. Epik High later tapped him for Gaehwa. In 2026, he wrote and composed the title track for Kim Sung Kyu's mini album OFF THE MAP, a reminder that Jong-wan remains a trusted songwriter even outside the NELL universe. He is not just the singer of a long-running band. He is one of the scene's most durable architects.
