SHINee

SHINee (샤이니) is a South Korean boy band formed by SM Entertainment in 2008. Dubbed the "Princes of K-pop," the group defined a generation of idol music through genre-blending production, razor-sharp choreography, and a willingness to experiment that set them apart from their contemporaries. The group debuted on May 25, 2008 with the single "Replay," which started a fashion trend among Korean students that the media dubbed the "SHINee Trend." Original members Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin established a sonic identity that pulled from R&B, EDM, hip-hop, and funk, often within the same album. Ring Ding Dong (2009) and Lucifer (2010) became defining tracks of the late 2000s K-pop era. Their discography spans landmark albums including The Misconceptions of Us (2013), Odd (2015), 1 of 1 (2016), and Don't Call Me (2021). In Japan, they became one of the most successful Korean acts, with multiple albums certified Gold by RIAJ. SHINee was also the first Asian artist to perform at London's Abbey Road Studios. The group suffered an irreplaceable loss when Jonghyun passed away on December 18, 2017. The remaining four members continued as SHINee, releasing The Story of Light (2018) as a tribute and returning with Don't Call Me and Hard (2023) after completing military service. Their 15th anniversary was marked by a commemorative film in 2023. Each member has built a substantial solo career. Taemin became one of K-pop's most revered solo performers, Onew and Key released acclaimed solo albums, and Minho established himself as an actor. Despite following individual paths, SHINee's bond and their impact on the genre remain a touchstone for every generation of K-pop that followed them.
