ONEW Steps Up as Songwriter-Producer with Fifth Mini Album TOUGH LOVE
SHINee leader ONEW marks a new chapter in his solo career with TOUGH LOVE, his fifth mini album, writing all five tracks and co-composing two for a March 9 release.
March 1, 2026
For 18 years, ONEW (온유) has been the steady center of SHINee: the leader who held the group's emotional core together through chart runs, world tours, and the years his members spent in military service. On March 9, he makes his boldest move as a solo artist. His fifth mini album, TOUGH LOVE, drops at 6 PM KST, and it is the most creatively personal project he has released under his own name.
For the first time, ONEW wrote lyrics for every track on the album. He also co-composed two of them: the title track "TOUGH LOVE" and the emotionally charged "Lie." That is not a footnote. For an artist who built his reputation entirely on vocal delivery, stepping into the writer's room in a meaningful way marks a genuine shift in how he operates.
Five Tracks, One Voice
TOUGH LOVE runs five tracks. The title song sets the mood: direct, assured, and built on ONEW's own words. "Dot dot dot (...)" leans into R&B territory with a minimal beat that keeps the spotlight on the vocal. "Flex on Me" goes heavier, with a bass line and groove-driven rhythm that contrasts the record's quieter moments. "Lie," co-composed by ONEW alongside the title track, carries more emotional weight. Then "X, Oh Why?" closes the set on an energetic note.
Track videos for "X, Oh Why?" were released on February 28 in two versions, both sourced from concert encore highlight footage. The full album preview dropped February 27, giving fans their first listen across all five tracks.
The Growth Story
ONEW has been releasing solo music since 2018, but the trajectory has been deliberate rather than prolific. His output spans ballad-driven albums, Japanese releases, and a 2025 full-length, Percent, that arrived last July. What distinguishes TOUGH LOVE is the level of creative ownership. Writing lyrics for an entire mini album, while also contributing to the composition of its two emotional centerpieces, represents a different kind of investment.
The concept photos released in February reinforced the tone: ONEW in a gray suit against a red heart backdrop for one set, and scrapbook-style visuals for another. The contrast, between polished control and something more personal and collaged, maps onto the album's approach. TOUGH LOVE does not settle for one mood.
Asia Tour Incoming
Alongside the album announcement, ONEW revealed his 0226 TOUGH LOVE fan meeting tour across Asia. The run covers Taipei, Hong Kong, Osaka, and Tokyo, with dates spanning April into May 2026. For SHINee fans and ONEW's solo audience in those markets, this is the first extended live run tied to the new material.
Taemin is currently completing his military service, making ONEW one of the most active SHINee members in the solo space right now. The fan meeting tour keeps him visible across the markets where the group has historically performed strongest.
What to Watch
TOUGH LOVE lands March 9 via SM Entertainment affiliate Griffin Entertainment. For an artist who has always been defined by his voice, this album adds something new to the conversation: authorship. How listeners receive that shift, and whether it translates to chart performance, will say something about where ONEW sits in K-pop's current solo landscape.
The album is available for pre-order now. Fan meeting tour dates and ticketing information are available through ONEW's official channels.
