SEVENTEEN

SEVENTEEN (세븐틴) redefined what a K-pop group could be. Thirteen members, three specialized units, zero reliance on outside production. Formed by PLEDIS Entertainment under the HYBE umbrella, SVT debuted in May 2015 and built their reputation on self-producing everything from music to choreography to visual direction. The group operates through a hip-hop unit (S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, Vernon), vocal unit (Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, Seungkwan), and performance unit (Hoshi, Jun, The8, Dino). Woozi has written or co-written nearly every title track. This level of creative ownership is rare in the idol system and has earned them industry-wide respect. FML (2023) moved over 6 million copies and was named the best-selling album of 2023 by IFPI, making SEVENTEEN the first group to sell 10 million albums in a single calendar year. Their 2025 album Happy Burstday debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The RIGHT HERE world tour drew over 1 million concertgoers, and SEVENTEEN ranked as the No. 1 K-pop act on Billboard Boxscore by mid-2025. SEVENTEEN became the first K-pop act to headline Glastonbury Festival in June 2024, performing on the Pyramid Stage. Brand partnerships include global ambassador roles for Mogu Mogu, Bibigo, and CASETiFY. Individual luxury deals span Mingyu with Bvlgari and Calvin Klein, S.Coups with Loewe, Jun with Maison Margiela, and Jeonghan with Acqua di Parma. Sub-units BSS, Jeonghan x Wonwoo, and others have charted independently, proving depth well beyond the full group format.

Fans Also Ask

Why is SEVENTEEN called SEVENTEEN if they have 13 members?
The name represents a formula: 13 members plus 3 performance units equals 1 team (13+3+1=17). Earlier pre-debut configurations also explored a 17-member lineup, adding another layer to the name.
What are SEVENTEEN's three units?
SEVENTEEN operates as three specialized sub-units. The Hip-Hop Unit (S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, Vernon) handles rapping and harder-edged production. The Vocal Unit (Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, Seungkwan) focuses on harmonies and ballads. The Performance Unit (Hoshi, Jun, The8, Dino) drives choreography and stage direction.
What makes SEVENTEEN a self-producing group?
SEVENTEEN writes, composes, and choreographs the vast majority of their own material. Woozi has written or co-written nearly every title track since debut. Hoshi directs most choreography. The members collectively shape visual concepts, setlists, and fan content, a level of creative control that is rare in the idol system and became central to their identity.
When did SEVENTEEN debut and how many albums have they released?
SEVENTEEN debuted on May 26, 2015, with the EP 17 Carat under PLEDIS Entertainment. Their 2023 mini album FML surpassed 6 million copies sold at release, one of the best-selling K-pop albums of its era. Key titles include Face the Sun (2022), SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN (2023), and Spill the Feels (2024).
Has SEVENTEEN performed at major Western music festivals?
Yes. In June 2024, SEVENTEEN became the first K-pop act to perform on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival in the UK, one of the most iconic stages in live music. Their RIGHT HERE world tour drew over 1 million concertgoers across 2024-2025 and ranked them No. 1 on Billboard Boxscore among K-pop acts.
