Netflix is betting on superheroes with a twist. The WONDERfools (원더풀스), arriving Q2 2026, pairs Park Eun-bin with Fantagio's Cha Eun-woo in a comedic action-adventure about ordinary people who gain extraordinary abilities they can barely control. Set in 1999 at the height of Y2K hysteria, it's one of the streamer's most ambitious Korean projects yet.

Director Yoo In-sik reunites with Park Eun-bin after their smash hit Extraordinary Attorney Woo. That drama became a cultural phenomenon, spending 21 weeks on Netflix's non-English global top ten and reaching 57 countries. For The WONDERfools, Yoo trades courtrooms for chaos, building a world where superpowers are less blessing than burden.

What Is The WONDERfools About?

The series follows a group of Haeseong City misfits who unexpectedly gain superpowers after a mysterious incident. The catch? They're "flawed superhumans" who can't control their abilities, triggering them accidentally at the worst possible moments. As millennium doomsday panic grips the city, these unlikely heroes must learn to harness their chaotic gifts while confronting villains threatening their hometown.

Park Eun-bin plays Eun Chae-ni, described as "Haeseong City's biggest trainwreck." Charming and funny but perpetually in over her head, Chae-ni gets swept up in the incident that grants her powers. Cha Eun-woo takes on Lee Woon-jung, a by-the-book civic servant from Seoul who approaches a string of disappearances with deep suspicion. He's the straight-man to Chae-ni's chaos, joining her investigation with his own mysterious agenda.

A Stacked Supporting Cast

The ensemble extends far beyond the leads. Veteran actress Kim Hae-sook (Gyeongseong Creature, Strong Girl Namsoon) plays Kim Jeon-bok, Chae-ni's grandmother and sole remaining family. Jeon-bok owns a popular local restaurant, but Netflix teases a "glamorous yet dark past" hiding beneath her grandmotherly exterior.

Choi Dae-hoon (Uprising, Captivating the King) and Im Seong-jae (Hellbound Season 2) round out the superhero squad as Son Kyung-hoon and Kang Ro-bin, two locals who gain abilities alongside Chae-ni. The production promises their "flawed" powers add humor to the action sequences.

Son Hyun-joo (The Good Detective) brings menace as Ha Won-do, a character with "dark desires hidden behind a cold and rational exterior." Bae Na-ra joined the cast in June 2025 in an undisclosed role.

From Stan Lee IP to Netflix Original

The WONDERfools has a tangled origin story. The project began in 2018 as The B-Team, based on intellectual property from Marvel legend Stan Lee's POW! Entertainment. The original concept followed B-rated superheroes battling the mad scientist who created them.

By 2020, SBS announced The B-Team for their 2021 lineup with Yoo In-sik attached to direct. But the drama never materialized on Korean broadcast TV. When full-scale production finally launched in 2024, producers NANGMANCREW confirmed the series had evolved into an original work, dropping Stan Lee's IP entirely. "This was something agreed upon with the original author," the company stated. "The title would also be changed."

The result is a distinctly Korean superhero story, blending the peninsula's turn-of-the-century anxieties with genre-bending comedy. Writer Heo Da-joong, who penned the record-breaking Korean film Extreme Job, brings his signature humor to the script. Creator Kang Eun-kyung (Gyeongseong Creature, Dr. Romantic) shapes the overall vision alongside Kakao Entertainment as co-producers.

Cha Eun-woo's Final Drama Before Hiatus

For Cha Eun-woo fans, The WONDERfools carries extra significance. The former ASTRO member began mandatory military service on July 28, 2025, with discharge expected in January 2027. This means the Netflix series will be his last on-screen appearance for potentially three years.

Cha built his acting career on romantic leads in True Beauty, My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, and Wonderful World. Lee Woon-jung marks a departure: a socially awkward, rule-obsessed civil servant far removed from his previous heartthrob roles. His solo music career, launched in 2024 with the EP Entity, is also on hold during service.

When Does The WONDERfools Premiere?

Netflix has confirmed a Q2 2026 release window (April through June). Reports have circulated around a May 15 premiere date, but Netflix stated the schedule remains under discussion. Principal photography wrapped in June 2025 after eight months of production that began in October 2024.

The series comprises eight episodes, following Netflix's preferred format for high-concept Korean dramas. Given the reunion of Yoo In-sik and Park Eun-bin, expectations are stratospheric. Extraordinary Attorney Woo proved Korean streaming content can dominate global charts; The WONDERfools aims to prove superheroes are the next genre Korea can own.
