XG

XG (Xtraordinary Genes) is a seven-member Japanese group formed by XGALX, a subsidiary of Avex. The group debuted on March 18, 2022, with "Tippy Toes" and quickly became the first Japanese artists to reach No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Trending Songs weekly chart. Their self-coined "X-POP" sound blends hip-hop, R&B, and electronic music with a global-first approach that sidesteps traditional idol frameworks entirely. Members Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Harvey, Juria, Maya, and Cocona trained together under XGALX's system and release music in English, Japanese, and Korean simultaneously. Signing with Def Jam Japan expanded the group's reach in the US market from an early stage. Their discography spans multiple stylistic modes, from the drill-influenced "WOKE UP" and the stadium-ready "LEFT RIGHT" to the R&B-leaning "Shooting Star" and the emotionally charged "IS THIS LOVE." In April 2025, XG performed at Coachella, making them one of the most prominent Japanese acts to appear at the festival in recent years and cementing their status as a genuinely global act. In December 2025, member Cocona publicly came out as transmasculine non-binary on their 20th birthday, making them one of the most prominent openly trans artists in the Japanese music industry. XG's debut album THE CORE (2025) arrived as the group continued to expand their live footprint through world touring, Rolling Stone, Vogue, and major international outlets have all covered the group as a flagship case study in Japanese artists crossing over without compromising their identity.
