IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) is the organization that represents the global recording industry. Founded in 1933 in Rome and registered in Switzerland, IFPI operates a secretariat at 7 Air Street, Piccadilly, London, with regional offices in Brussels, Hong Kong, Miami, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, and Nairobi. The federation represents over 8,000 record company members across more than 70 countries.
IFPI publishes the Global Music Report, the recording industry's most authoritative annual assessment of the worldwide music market. According to the 2025 Global Music Report, global recorded music revenues grew 4.8% in 2024 to reach an estimated $28.6 billion, driven almost entirely by subscription streaming. Paid subscription revenue alone rose 9.5% to over $20 billion, with 752 million subscribers globally, up 10.6% year-on-year. Ad-supported streaming contributed an additional $5.1 billion.
IFPI maintains the official global charts that rank the world's best-selling and most-streamed albums and artists. The IFPI Global Album Sales Chart, Global Album Chart, Global Artist Chart, and Global Single Chart have become essential benchmarks for measuring commercial performance across markets.
The organization's charts have documented K-pop's rise to album sales dominance in real time. In 2024, Korean acts claimed nine of the top 10 positions on the Global Album Sales Chart, with only Taylor Swift breaking through at #1. In 2025, the dominance continued: Stray Kids hit #2, SEVENTEEN landed at #3, and ENHYPEN at #4. HYBE alone placed four acts in the top 10. BTS won IFPI's Global Recording Artist of the Year in both 2020 and 2021.
Beyond charts, IFPI coordinates anti-piracy efforts, advocates for copyright protection, and works with governments worldwide on music industry policy. The federation's content protection programs span digital piracy enforcement, stream manipulation detection, and rights management across streaming platforms. CEO Victoria Oakley took over leadership in June 2024, succeeding Frances Moore who held the role from 2010 to 2023.
