SUGA

Suga (민윤기) has always been the quiet storm inside BTS. Born Min Yoongi in Daegu on March 9, 1993, he arrived at Big Hit as a producer first and performer second, bringing a raw honesty to his lyrics that drew from struggles with depression, social anxiety, and the pressures of Korean society. Under his solo alias Agust D, he released three projects that rank among K-pop’s most critically acclaimed bodies of work: 2016’s Agust D, 2020’s D-2 (which debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200), and 2023’s D-DAY, supported by a solo world tour that cemented his reputation as one of the genre’s most compelling live performers. His production credits extend far beyond BTS, with collaborations with Halsey, Juice WRLD, MAX, and IU, building a reputation as one of the most versatile producers to emerge from K-pop. A chronic shoulder injury led to his completing mandatory military service as a social service agent, the last BTS member to be discharged in June 2025. With the group’s 2026 reunion now underway and the release of BTS’s fifth studio album ARIRANG (March 20, 2026), Suga returns not just as a rapper but as one of the most respected creative minds in Korean music. The group’s ARIRANG World Tour, spanning 2026-2027, marks one of K-pop’s most anticipated live events in years.

What is SUGA's real name and background?
SUGA's real name is Min Yoon-gi (민윤기), born March 9, 1993 in Daegu, South Korea. He joined Big Hit Entertainment in 2010 as a trainee, working part-time jobs to fund his commute while building his skills as a producer and rapper. He debuted with BTS in June 2013 and has become one of K-pop's most respected in-house producers, contributing to virtually every BTS release across the discography.
What is SUGA's Agust D alias and what has he released?
Agust D is SUGA's solo rap alias -- a reverse reading of D-town Suga, referencing his Daegu roots. Under the name, he has released three acclaimed projects: the free mixtape Agust D (2016), D-2 (2020, debuting at number 11 on the Billboard 200), and D-DAY (April 2023), his first commercial studio album. D-DAY was supported by the SUGA | Agust D Tour, a global concert run from April to August 2023.
Why did SUGA serve as a social worker for military service?
SUGA underwent rotator cuff shoulder surgery in January 2023 and was classified as medically ineligible for active duty. He served instead as a public service worker (사회복무요원), beginning September 22, 2023. He was discharged on June 21, 2025 -- the last of BTS's seven members to complete mandatory military service, closing a chapter the group had navigated across multiple album cycles.
Which other artists has SUGA produced for?
Beyond BTS, SUGA has produced for artists across generations and genres. Notable credits include Halsey's SUGA's Interlude (2020), IU's Eight (2020) and People Pt. 2 (2023), and PSY's That That (2022), which he wrote, produced, and featured on. He approaches production as emotional architecture -- crafting tracks designed to communicate feeling across language barriers.
What is SUGA doing since his 2025 military discharge?
Following his June 2025 discharge, SUGA joined the full BTS reunion. The group released the studio album ARIRANG in March 2026 and launched the BTS WORLD TOUR ARIRANG -- their first full-group concert run since their 2022 hiatus. SUGA has also indicated plans for new solo material under the Agust D alias.
