Big Ocean (빅오션), the world's first K-pop boy group comprised entirely of deaf and hard of hearing members, released their third mini album THE GREATEST BATTLE on March 3, 2026. The release date was not accidental. March 3 is World Hearing Day, and the three-member group, under PARASTAR Entertainment, used the global health observance as a launchpad for their most commanding project to date. At a media showcase at the Showking K-pop Center in Seoul's Mapo District, members PJ, Chanyeon, and Jiseok unveiled the eight-track album anchored by double title tracks "One Man Army" and "Cold Moon." Released through Dreamus, the album also includes instrumental versions of all four primary songs. This is not a comeback asking for a seat at the table. It is a group that has already pulled up a chair.
Eight Tracks, One Thesis
THE GREATEST BATTLE is built around a single argument: the fight belongs to anyone willing to finish it. Opening track "Alive" establishes that thesis immediately, a high-voltage declaration of presence that functions as both battle cry and scene-setter. From there, the album pivots to its centerpiece.
"One Man Army," the primary title track, draws its inspiration from Admiral Yi Sun-sin (이순신) and the Battle of Myeongnyang of 1597, in which a Korean naval force of 12 ships repelled a Japanese fleet of over 130 vessels during the Imjin War. The parallel is not subtle, but it lands. "The Battle of Myeongnyang seemed impossible to win, but it ended in victory," Chanyeon said at the showcase. "That story resonated deeply with us. It feels like a cheering song for myself. I hope listeners find strength in it too."
What makes the track notable beyond its concept: all three members contributed to its composition, a first for the group per the group's official showcase notes. Grand string arrangements layered over heavy 808 bass give it the scope the subject demands. "Back," the third track, pivots to a brighter frequency with jazzy guitar and a house-inflected groove, a declaration of return after chaos. The album closes its main sequence with co-title track "Cold Moon," a nu-disco synth-pop piece that uses the moon as a metaphor for the calm that follows hardship. The album also includes instrumental versions of all four songs.
Sign Language Is the Choreography
Since their April 2024 debut, Big Ocean have incorporated sign language into every stage performance, not as an accessibility feature added after the fact, but as a primary visual and artistic element. For "One Man Army," that approach scales dramatically. Approximately 20 backup dancers join the trio, with formations designed to simulate a sailing fleet. Costume arm straps were engineered specifically to amplify hand movement visibility during sign language sequences.
"Cold Moon" applies the same principle at a more intimate scale. "Like 'One Man Army,' it includes sign language performance, so audiences can clearly understand the lyrics through sign language as well," PJ said at the showcase. Both performances debuted on the MBC Music Core stage on March 14 with the full production intact, per MBC's broadcast records.
The Bigger Picture
Big Ocean's cultural footprint has expanded considerably since their April 2024 debut. In 2025, the trio landed on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list, performed at the United Nations Development Programme in New York, and received the Social Impact Award at the TikTok Awards Korea. According to a March 2026 amNewYork profile, production teams now proactively inquire about accessibility needs when approaching the group, a measurable industry shift the members say began with their growing visibility. Their deaf and hard of hearing identity, once treated as a barrier by an industry that had no framework for it, has become the lens through which they make every significant creative decision. The sign language choreography in "One Man Army" and "Cold Moon" is not an accessibility feature added after the fact. It is the core of the performance, designed that way from the first beat.
"Because we have hearing disabilities, we were often told we would not make it," Jiseok said at the album showcase. "The happiness we feel when enjoying music is what kept us going. That is why we came together to pursue our dream of becoming idols."
"The theme of this album is a great battle won after a difficult fight," he added. "We have lived fiercely while fighting prejudice against our disability. But it is not just us. Everyone is fighting their own battles. We wanted to send support to all of them."
US Tour: Nine Cities, April 2026
Big Ocean bring THE GREATEST BATTLE to North America starting April 10. The nine-city run is their most extensive US routing to date:
- April 10: Chicago, Illinois
- April 12: New York, NY
- April 14: Minneapolis, Minnesota
- April 16: Washington, D.C.
- April 19: Atlanta, Georgia
- April 21: Dallas, Texas
- April 23: Kansas City, Missouri
- April 24: Los Angeles, California
- April 26: Raleigh, North Carolina
For a group that debuted less than two years ago, performed at the UN, and is now composing their own title tracks, THE GREATEST BATTLE reads exactly as the title promises. A victory, documented in real time.
