KPop Demon Hunters 2 Is Confirmed. The Directors Are Back. And Two Oscars Just Made It Official.
Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation confirm KPop Demon Hunters 2 is in development, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning under an exclusive multi-year deal targeting 2029. Days before the original film swept the Oscars.
March 17, 2026
Netflix's most popular film of all time is getting a sequel, and if you needed any more proof that KPop Demon Hunters isn't slowing down, consider this: four days after Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation confirmed a second film, the franchise walked home from the 98th Academy Awards with two Oscars.
The sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is officially in development, with Maggie Kang (강민지) and Chris Appelhans returning to write and direct. The follow-up will be the first film out of the pair's new exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal with Netflix across animation. The announcement came on March 12, 2026. Three days later, the original film won Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song for "Golden" at the Oscars.
The Numbers That Made a Sequel Inevitable
KPop Demon Hunters hit Netflix in June 2025 and broke records from its first week. It now stands as the streamer's most popular film ever, with more than 500 million views. Its soundtrack has been streamed 11 billion times. HUNTR/X, the fictional K-pop trio at the film's center, became the first K-pop girl group to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. "Golden," their centerpiece track, became the first K-pop song in history to win a Grammy Award.
The franchise even crossed into theatrical territory. Netflix brought a sing-along version to US cinemas in August 2025, where it opened to $19 million and ended its run with roughly $25 million at the domestic box office. Not bad for a film that premiered as a streaming-first title. And at the Annie Awards, the franchise swept all 10 of its nominations, a perfect score that had never been achieved before.
Maggie Kang's Moment
For Kang, the sequel is not a business decision. It's a continuation of something personal. "I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters," she said in a statement. "There's so much more to this world we have built and I'm excited to show you. This is only the beginning."
Kang, born in Seoul and raised in Canada, co-wrote the film's story and co-directed alongside Appelhans, whose background in character design and visual development shaped the film's aesthetic language. The new Netflix deal keeps both exclusive to the platform for animation across the multi-year term. It's a significant bet from Netflix on a creative partnership that already delivered the biggest film in the platform's history.
The Guardian reported Appelhans pushing back on any pressure to rush a sequel into production. "I've seen a lot of comments on YouTube interviews voted right to the top that say something along the lines of, 'If there's going to be a sequel, let them cook. Don't rush it. We can all wait,'" he told the outlet. The target release window is 2029, which some in the industry consider aggressive for the animation pipeline given the typical production timeline.
What Comes Next for HUNTR/X
Plot details for KPop Demon Hunters 2 haven't been released. The original film follows HUNTR/X, a fictional K-pop trio made up of characters Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who lead double lives as demon hunters protecting their fans from supernatural threats. Their antagonists are the Saja Boys, a rival boy band secretly made up of demons. Appelhans teased that the creative team is "excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve."
The voice cast for the first film featured Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo. The singing voices of HUNTR/X were provided by EJAE, Audrey NUNA, and REI AMI. No casting announcements have been made for the sequel.
Netflix Doubles Down on a Franchise
Netflix leadership was unambiguous about what this franchise means to the platform. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said Kang and Appelhans "didn't just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres." Netflix Film Chairman Dan Lin called the original film "the most popular Netflix movie of all time" and praised the directors for taking "a bold creative swing by telling a story that was both deeply personal and broke cultural barriers."
Sony Pictures Animation presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville called the sequel a natural extension of the studio's model: "Championing the bold creative visions of our filmmakers is at the heart of everything we do at Sony Pictures Animation. Maggie and Chris brought their incredibly distinct perspectives to this film, telling a story audiences embraced around the globe."
The franchise has already received the Criterion Collection treatment, placing it alongside Akira, Perfect Blue, and the Studio Ghibli catalog. With two Oscars now in the trophy case and a sequel greenlit under a long-term creative partnership, the KPop Demon Hunters universe is clearly just getting started.
