EXO

EXO (엑소) is one of K-pop's most commercially dominant acts, formed by SM Entertainment and debuted April 8, 2012. Originally a twelve-member split concept performing in Korean (Exo-K) and Mandarin (Exo-M), the group consolidated to a nine-member lineup after the departures of Kris, Luhan, and Tao between 2014 and 2015. Current members: Xiumin, Suho, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun. The commercial breakthrough came with XOXO (2013) and defining single "Growl," selling over a million copies and making EXO the first Korean act to hit that benchmark in twelve years. Five consecutive Album of the Year wins at the MAMA Awards from 2012 to 2016, plus two Artist of the Year wins at the Melon Music Awards. Don't Mess Up My Tempo (2018) debuted at number 23 on the Billboard 200. Exist (2023) became their best-selling South Korean release, moving over two million domestic copies. From 2024, Baekhyun founded INB100, with Xiumin and Chen joining for solo and EXO-CBX activities while remaining under SM for group work. Kai holds a Gucci ambassadorship; D.O. has built a parallel acting career alongside group activities.

Who are the current members of EXO?
EXO is officially a nine-member group: Suho, Xiumin, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun. The team debuted with 12 members in 2012, and Kris, Luhan, and Tao left the lineup between 2014 and 2015 as the group moved forward under the unified EXO name.
When did EXO debut?
EXO debuted on April 8, 2012 under SM Entertainment with the mini album MAMA. The rollout began with EXO-K and EXO-M, two language-based units built for Korean and Mandarin promotions, before the group consolidated into one of the defining boy-band acts of the third-generation K-pop boom.
What does EXO-L mean?
EXO-L is the official fandom name for EXO. SM Entertainment announced it on August 5, 2014, with the L representing the link between EXO-K and EXO-M. The name also plays on love, which is why EXO-L has stayed central to the group’s fan identity and branding.
What are EXO's signature songs?
EXO’s signature run includes Growl, Call Me Baby, Monster, Ko Ko Bop, Tempo, and Love Shot. Growl pushed the group into a new commercial tier in 2013, while songs like Monster and Love Shot helped define EXO’s sharper, performance-first image across the next phase of their catalog.
Why is EXO important in K-pop?
EXO helped define the 2010s expansion of K-pop through blockbuster physical sales, arena-scale touring, and a catalog that balanced vocal-heavy singles with harder performance tracks. Their run of million-seller releases and repeated Album of the Year wins turned them into one of SM Entertainment’s most commercially powerful groups.
