Starship Entertainment

Starship Entertainment (스타쉽 엔터테인먼트) is one of South Korea's "five major agencies" and a driving force behind some of K-pop's biggest acts of the last decade. Founded on January 28, 2008 by husband-and-wife duo Kim Shi-dae and Seo Hyun-joo alongside Kim Young-suk, the company grew from a modest label into a global entertainment operation with a roster that consistently tops charts, sells out arenas, and shapes the direction of the industry. Kim Shi-dae previously worked as a road manager at Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE), while Seo Hyun-joo came from JYP Entertainment. That cross-pollination of experience from two of K-pop's most influential companies gave Starship a distinct identity from day one: a balance between hip-hop credibility and polished pop production. The label's first signing was vocalist K.Will, whose 2012 hit "Please Don't..." remains one of the most recognized K-pop ballads ever recorded. Starship debuted girl group SISTAR in 2010 and boy group Boyfriend in 2011, establishing a pattern of alternating male and female acts that continues to this day. SISTAR's summer anthems like "Loving U" and "Touch My Body" dominated Korean charts throughout the early 2010s before the group disbanded in 2017. In December 2013, LOEN Entertainment (the predecessor of Kakao Entertainment) acquired 70% of Starship's shares, making it an independent subsidiary. As of 2022, Kakao Entertainment holds 59.73% of the label. Despite the corporate ownership, Starship has maintained operational independence and its own distinct creative direction. MONSTA X debuted in 2015 through Mnet's survival show No.Mercy, bringing a harder, hip-hop-inflected sound that earned the group a dedicated global fanbase. WJSN (Cosmic Girls) followed in 2016 as a joint venture with China's Yuehua Entertainment, and boy group CRAVITY launched in April 2020. The label's biggest commercial success came with the debut of IVE on December 1, 2021. Featuring former IZ*ONE members Jang Wonyoung and An Yujin alongside Gaeul, Rei, Liz, and Leeseo, IVE became one of the fastest-rising groups in K-pop history. Their debut single "Eleven" and follow-ups "Love Dive" and "After LIKE" swept music show wins and award ceremonies, establishing IVE as a defining act of the fourth generation. Their second studio album REVIVE+ dropped in February 2026 with 12 tracks including solo songs for every member. In 2025, Starship entered its most aggressive expansion phase. The label restructured into a three-division system: Division 1 manages K.Will, MONSTA X, and IVE; Division 2 handles WJSN and CRAVITY; Division 3 oversees new acts. Girl group KiiiKiii (키키) debuted on March 24, 2025 with their first EP Uncut Gem, marking Starship's first new girl group in four years. Boy group IDID followed in September 2025, formed through the survival show Debut's Plan. In July 2025, Starship acquired a second headquarters building in Gangnam valued at ₩59 billion ($42.7 million), and in October signed a letter of intent with Pop Mart for a global IP joint venture. Starship also manages actors through its subsidiary King Kong by Starship (merged in 2017), operates performance production company Shownote (acquired 2019), and runs hip-hop and indie subsidiary Highline Entertainment (launched 2017). The label reported revenue of ₩201.9 billion ($176.5 million) in 2023. Headquartered in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Starship Entertainment continues to operate as an independent label within the Kakao ecosystem, consistently producing commercially dominant groups while maintaining the founder-led creative culture that set it apart from the start.
